Game-Changer: New Navy Railgun Reaches Sci-Fi Levels of Awesome

December 11, 2010 0 Comments

The dream weapon for decades of militaries all over the world just took a giant leap forward.  The Navy successfully test-fired a railgun 3 times more powerful than the weapon it built back in 2008.   Each non-explosive bullet is roughly estimated to hit targets with the force of 33 cars impacting at 100 mph.  Once online, the railgun will extend a warship's combat range from 13 miles using standard artillery to over 100 miles.  Theoretically, Navy ships outfitted with railguns wouldn't need to carry much explosives either.  Instead, they could use an enemy's own ammunition stockpile against him.  The railgun bullet would pierce an enemy ship's armor all the way into its ammunition stockpile, which would then detonate and sink the ship.
