A First Look at Adrianne Palicki as Wonder Woman

by WZ on March 18, 2011 0 Comments

Collider has a nice rundown of the new Wonder Woman. Unfortunately, I'm not buying the new look. I don't know if it's due to the baby fat around her cheeks or the non-functional Halloween quality costume.

Anycase, looks like we're in for a campy Xena the Warrior Princess style treatment. I think they should've gone with the new updated Wonder Woman uniform in the comics.

Photo-Realistic Ad is Actually Entirely Computer-Generated

by WZ on March 12, 2011 0 Comments

Check out this amazing advertisement by Silestone, a company that makes countertops. Everything in this video is computer-generated and it took 2 people in 2 1/2 months to create.

The "fresh fruit" in this video blows me away.

U.S.-led Archaeologists Claim to Find the Lost City of Atlantis

by WZ on March 12, 2011 0 Comments

A team of archaeologists led by Richard Freund of the University of Harford, Connecticut have announced they have discovered the lost city of Atlantis at the bottom of a marsh in Spain. The team's findings will be unveiled tomorrow on the National Geographic Channel in a special called "Finding Atlantis." In a turn of historical irony, the city that the archaeologists discovered was indeed destroyed by a tsunami.

What makes this particular discovery of Atlantis different from the rest is that it seems to fit a primary theory...that after Atlantis was destroyed, the inhabitants fled to form multiple nearby "memorial" cities. And indeed, this new Atlantis discovery has such cities located around it.

CBS Renews "How I Met Your Mother" for Two More Seasons

by WZ on March 5, 2011 0 Comments

CBS has locked in two more seasons of "How I Met Your Mother". All I got to say is, "Yaaaaaaaaay!" This series is pretty much the only television I watch ever. I  got suckered into one episode by my wife and then it was all downhill from there.

As sad as I'll be to see the series end, they probably should get around to it. As the Collider article mentions, the underlying story about how Ted Mosby meets his wife can't keep going...and on...and on....and on. Jason Segel also enjoys a budding movie career that he'll eventually need to leave the show for.

HIMYM is a rare gem aimed mostly at the late-20 and early-30's crowd.  My wife and I have spent many evenings together laughing on the couch over this series.

by WZ on March 2, 2011 0 Comments

Welcome to the 21st century era of instant, where a little notoriety can go a long way in extending your reach into society. Over the last day, Charlie Sheen has gained 1 million Twitter followers over the course of one day, 600,000 of them in a span of 8 hours.  In his first tweet, Sheen posted a picture of himself with porn star Bree Olsen holding up chocolate milk and a naked juice.

Cartoon Network Releases First "Thundercats" Trailer

by WZ on February 26, 2011 0 Comments

The Cartoon Network has released its first official trailer for the re-imagined “Thundercats” series.  Looks pretty well-done, at least for anime style. Kids from the 80’s should get a kick out of the video below.

I used to love “Thundercats” but I haven’t been following the remake’s development as closely as I’d like.  So, I’m a tad confused where this other trailer comes into the picture.

Amazon Declares War on Netflix

by WZ on February 22, 2011 0 Comments

Amazon released a new Movie/TV streaming service which will be completely free to customers who already pay $79 dollars a year for free 2-day shipping. To everyone else, that's the price to subscribe.  Customers can choose between 5,000 TV shows and movies.  This increases the number of serious Netflix competitors to 4...Apple, Google, Microsoft and now Amazon.

You may see the announcement on the Amazon homepage. Amazon's service can be run on a computer or on the Roku, which is a device that costs ~$199.

Netflix still ranks as number 1 though, offering access to 20,000 TV shows and movies for 7.99 a month, $5 more than Amazon's per year price. For now, the Amazon deal seems mostly a nice reinforcement for those already paying the free shipping charges.

I honestly don't see Netflix winning in the long run here. The ...

Skynet Completes His Genocide of the Human Race on Jeopardy

by WZ on February 17, 2011 0 Comments

Well, fellow humans, Day 3 has come and gone. IBM's Watson artificial intelligence has utterly crushed both human Jeopardy champions Kenn Jennings and Brad Rutter, and there was no John Conner to save them. The final scores read Watson $77,147, Ken Jennings $24,000 and Brad Rutter $21,600.

IBM plans to donate all of Watson's winnings to charity. We've been following Watson's journey at Logic-Cool with great interest, here, here and here. In other little known news, IBM will turn 100 this June.

Wonder Woman Finally Gets a Face

by WZ on February 17, 2011 0 Comments

A Wonder Woman project has been on and off repeatedly over the last decade. Today (finally) a new Wonder Woman is making her debut. NBC has tapped "Friday Night Lights" actress Adrianne Palicki as Diana. Palicki will also star in the RED DAWN remake. Wonder Woman will be produced by David E. Kelley, the same mind behind "Boston Legal" and "Ally McBeal".

I understand why Wonder Woman is taking so long. Out of all the most iconic superheroes, she's got the most potential to be ultra-cheesy. She runs around in a patriotic swimwear, uses a lasso for a weapon and flies in a jet you can't see.

Skynet Utterly Crushes Human Resistance on 2nd Day of Jeopardy

by WZ on February 15, 2011 0 Comments

IBM's Watson artificial intelligence steamrolled his mortal opponents in the 2nd round of this 3 day match. Yesterday, was a tie. However, the mellow-voiced supercomputer flabbergasted his human rivals and the host by betting cryptic dollar values, such as $6,435, to which Alex Trebek responded, "I won't ask."

Alas, humankind put up a good fight...now on to world domination. Watch and weep, fellow humans.

Michael Jai White & Jeri Ryan Cast in MORTAL COMBAT Web-Series

by WZ on February 14, 2011 0 Comments

This is a guilty-pleasure post for those who used to play the arcade game Mortal Kombat a looong time ago. I got into this game back when you still fed quarters into it. Soon after, it made the leap into the first console games.

Michael Jai White (BLACK DYNAMITE) and Jeri Ryan (STAR TREK: VOYAGER) will reprise their roles as Jax and Sonya Blade in the upcoming Mortal Kombat web-series.

In the latest trend in movie pitching, ambitious filmmakers now invest several thousands of dollars into creating a short film in order to win higher budgets. In this instance, the Mortal Kombat reboot was sold off the strength of a viral video MORTAL KOMBAT: REBIRTH which had cost around $7,500 to shoot. I've been seeing a lot more of these pitches lately. Aspiring filmmakers take note. Technology is raising the bar.

Remake Test Footage For THUNDERCATS Leaked

by WZ on February 13, 2011 0 Comments

Sundays are usually slow days for science in the news. Today right before Valentine's is no different.  We'll kick things off today with some THUNDERCATS movie gossip. Collider's got the whole skinny on the CGI remake, based on the cult children's cartoon series.

The video below was supposedly test footage gained by Flixist. As usual for test footage, voice acting is terrible and much of the animation isn't polished. People aren't sure its the real deal, but Liono's childish behavior feels right for his character. Some leaked concept art can also be viewed on Movieline from 2009 as well.

Netflix Disavows Ads in Streamed Content

by WZ on February 11, 2011 0 Comments

Good for them. Ads in streamed content are a primary deterrent for me subscribing to Hulu Plus. You can have my money or you can have my time, but you can't have both.

Netflix's position stands opposite to Hulu, which is currently attempting to have its cake and eat it too by charging a subscription fee and forcing customers to watch advertisements. As the CNET article notes, Hulu justifies their position by claiming a high cost for keeping their content current. In contrast, VP Steve Swasey comments that Netflix isn't after "current" content, but instead focuses on complete content...meaning that they wait for a season/series to finish before licensing it.

I'm sure both companies have their fans. Some people absolutely must watch the latest TV episodes. Personally, I never watch a TV series until its complete.

Best Buy Launches Curious "Buy Back" Program

by WZ on February 7, 2011 0 Comments

What do Justin Bieber and Ozzy Osbourne have in common with smart electronic purchases? Probably nothing, unless it's an endorsement deal with Best Buy.  Best Buy has created a curious refund program called "Buy Back" where, according to their trademark slogan, you can "future-proof" your electronic purchases by paying a new upfront fee. Looking over the details, I can't say I'm thrilled.

For those paying the fee, Best Buy will offer partial refunds on products out to 2 to 4 years after the purchase date.  Please note: the above links are not affiliate links. The "Buy Back" is free until Feb. 12th, after which the following scale will apply:

- Laptops, netbooks and tablets: $69.99.

- Mobile phones: $39.99 to $59.99 depending on the price

- TVs: $59.99 to $349.99 depending on the price

Then, depending on when you return the item, you'll be ...

Too Lazy For Cliffs Notes? Wait For the Movie to Come Out

by WZ on January 31, 2011 0 Comments

Students who hate reading Shakespeare may now rejoice. At first, you could use cliffs notes to avoid reading his plays. But now, thanks to AOL and reality show producer Mark Burnett, you won't even have to read the cliffs notes. They've entered an agreement to produce comedic video shorts based on the little booklets published by Wiley.  The shorts will be featured on AOL.com later this year.

Differing Corporate Visions Threaten Hulu?

by WZ on January 30, 2011 0 Comments

Nah, probably not. Decision-making authority in these types of corporate partnerships are usually spelled out fairly meticulously...at least that's the hope.  I love Hulu. It's a truly fabulous service, currently delivering over 30,000 free television episodes and an assortment of free movies to casual web users.

Even so, this article at the WSJ spells out the emerging battle over Hulu's future. As is always the case, the moneymakers were going to show up and want to collect.

News Corp. (owner of Fox) and Disney (owner of ABC) wish to pull some of the free content, believing they might be cannibalizing other paid opportunities, such as selling those programs through Netflix, Apple and Microsoft.

The Hulu management itself has a differing vision. They want to radically transform their company into an online cable operator that would send live TV channels and video-on-demand to subscribers. I think ...

Christian Bale or Javier Bardem Tapped to Star in Stephen King Adaptation of "The Dark Tower"

by WZ on January 26, 2011 0 Comments

Conflicting reports on the Internet proclaim both men landing the role of the gunslinger Roland. Gossip extraordinaire Nicke Finke at Deadline claims Ron Howard offered the role to Javier Bardem. Meanwhile, the New York Post reports that Christian Bale currently stands in the lead.

Don't ya just love movie gossip? I'd place my money on Nicke Finke being right.

"The Dark Tower" tells the story of the gunslinger Roland, the last surviving member of a knightly order, who searches for the legendary Dark Tower in order to save civilization.  Ron Howard apparently aims this project to be a Cowboy genre version of LORD OF THE RINGS. He also plans a long-running television series that will bridge each movie installment.

Company Behind Kinect Aims to Kill Off TV Remotes

by WZ on January 21, 2011 0 Comments

Microsoft makes the Kinect, but the device was actually a marriage between two companies. Rare, a subsidiary of Microsoft Game Studios, developed Kinect's software, while the camera itself was built by the Israeli company PrimeSense.

Now, PrimeSense is working with PC manufacturer Asus to develop a device they call the WAVI Xtion. It will look similar to the Kinect, but will connect to the TV through a PC, allowing users to control their programming through hand gestures.

PrimeSense VP Adi Berenson aptly notes that the computer keyboard represents a primary obstacle in the efforts to merge internet functionality to televisions. The Xtion camera will eliminate the need for one.

The success of the Xtion depends on the camera's ability to detect hand gestures from a person sitting on a couch. In contrast, the Kinect's current ability to read gestures greatly depends on the user standing up in ...
